Hunger Games RRE#5

In the demolished land, formerly known as North America lays the nation of Panem. They force their citizens to watch one young man and one young woman to fight to the death every year in a competition known as The Hunger Games. When six-teen year old Katniss Everdeen's younger sister Prim is chosen to participate in the games, she was in disbelief and volunteered as a tribute, this turns her life upside down. During the games Katniss is motivated by friends; Rue and Peeta, the mocking jays, and her dad who was in a Cole mine accident. Also during the book Katniss changes with the help of those people or symbols.

In the book Katniss meets a little girl name Rue. She is sort of a shadow of Katniss, during the preparation before the games; Katniss catches Rue looking at her behind a pole. I think that can symbolize that Rue is scared of being in the Hunger Games just like Prim. From Katniss’s point of view this Rue can symbolize Prim, her sister.  I think this because both of them look up to Katniss literally and figuratively. In the games Rue was taking care of Katniss when she got stung by the hornets. Also Katniss was protecting Rue from the other competitors. Lastly when Rue got a bow and arrow stuck into her and died, she got a proper burial from Katniss, which was a very touching moment. Lastly from my knowledge Prim and Rue are both 12 years of age so this was one big symbol that helped Katniss.

Katniss was also motivated by loving Peeta. When the names were being picked after the girls were the boys. When Effie picked his name from the big bowl, she picked Peeta during that moment Katniss had a flashback. She remembered the one and only time she encountered Peeta one on one. To keep it short Peeta burned the bread he was baking so instead of listening to his mom and giving it to the pigs he gave it to Katniss. This was important because Katniss remembered Peeta for that and eventually fell into love with him through the games. This was another motivator because they united and won the games together.

This shows how Katniss used symbols through the book. I think that everyone should us symbols to remind them of things that can motivate them when they are in a deep situation.
