This Summer I read The Future of Us by: Jay Asher. The book has two main character’s Josh and Emma. Living as a High school student in the 1990’s was hard but you have no idea what they went through. Josh gave Emma an AOL CD-ROM for her new computer and somehow receives access to Facebook which hasn’t been invented yet. This allows them to see their future jobs, spouses, friends, their children, and where you live. Emma ended up with an unhappy marriage, and living in Ohio nowhere near any marine sea areas, where she wants to work. Mean while Josh is married to a popular high school girl named Sydney and lives in a large house with two kids. Emma is unhappy with her life so she refreshes the page to change her life and everyone else’s. Then that builds up a lot of problems because Josh is trying to pursue Sydney as his future wife and not change that. Some things in this book can relate to the real world when face book was created and some things are just, almost not possible.
One thing in the book that can relate to the real world is the problems they face. For instance getting pregnant in High school, relationships with friends, and anxiety all of these can have effect on people in the real world. Getting pregnant in High school is a big problem these days I don’t know this for sure but I think the rates of this are rising. In the book a good friend of Josh and Emma named Kellan gets pregnant. Emma finds this out by looking at Facebook and looking at when Kellans baby was born which happened to be a few months before the actual date she saw it.
Relationships are also a problem Josh and Emma separate towards the middle/end of the book because Josh is with Sydney and away from Emma, his best friend since they were born. I think Emma is jealous because in the future Josh is married to a beautiful High school girl and lives in a big house and Emma is unhappy with her marriage. In the real world people are always having problems with their peers and being jealous of somebody. Anxiety is a big part in this book Emma really wants to change her future and have a happy life and a big house near the Mediterranean Sea to study marine biology which isn’t happening for her. This is how the book can compare to the real world.
The book doesn’t relate to the real world because of the AOL CD-ROM. I don’t think anything like this could have happen. Two long time friends go explore on their computer; enter an AOL CD and Facebook, which hasn’t been invented yet just pops up. Next thing you know you can “read” the future. If anything like that happen to me I would be kind of excited but after reading this book I would not want this to happen to me. This is how the book can not relate to the real world.
The book, The Future of Us by Jay Asher is a good sci-fi book that I would recommend to anybody. It has some fantasies and some very realistic life problems in it but this AOL CD-ROM thing was a good thing to write about but I wish there was a part two to this book to see what happen after Emma threw away the CD and lived her life so the readers can see what it was like.
