Veterans Day passed a few days ago, during a high school tour in the Polly Prep country day school my mom and dad. Before the actual tour there were a few veterans speaking. One of them was explaining his that some veterans don’t come back the way they were before. He said that they are scarred for life and addicted to drugs. I have heard of a few examples of this, one is a close family friend and Ishmael Beah. They have night mares and harsh flash backs.
The family friend was in the army, he got hooked to drugs and now roams the streets of New York because after the army. I don’t know what the army was like for him because I wasn’t even born yet but this is an example of people coming home from the army changed.
Also Ishmael Beah, was a former child solider Sierra Leonean. He said that whenever he turned on water from a tap he would see blood; then he would stare at it until we saw real water. This is an example of seeing blood every day after shooting someone. He also said that he would wake up from a bad dream/ flashback and jump up in bed or from whatever he was doing. That is another example.
In conclusion war can be very harsh. I know a few people in war but I really hope that they come back “home” the same way they left.
