More and more people every day are moving out of their homes because they aren’t paying rent or because their houses are an unsustainable to live in. There are thousands of abandoned houses all over the New York and that number is growing every single day. As you can see in the picture to the right the houses are boarded up by the doors and windows. There are multiple stories’ that can go behind this row of abandoned houses, but nobody knows, they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
Abandoned houses causes poverty and this is a growing problem in New York. More abandoned buildings means more people put out into the street. This means more people on the street or in shelters. The streets and shelters are both getting crowded. We need to get more people off the street and build more shelters and soup kitchens for the less fortunate. Homeless shelters also need to be built in more convenient places. For instance there is a homeless women’s and children’s shelter being built on a residential block, and the residents there are very mad. Luckily construction has stopped because of budget cuts and money loss. Basically the residents are happy, but there is still a big pile of rubble and a half built building.
We should really try to stop this and make the rate of abandoned buildings/ poverty lower.
Mark: Hey Joe wachu’ doin after school?

*At Marks house*
Mark: Hey guys, my parents aren’t home look what I have, it’s marijuana
Jose: Oh sweet man!
Jamal: Mark! What the **** do you think you are doing! Put that away!
Mark: Nah man, ever since my cousin came out of jail he gave some of this to and it just relaxes you, you need to try it.
Jose: Yeah, don’t be chicken
Jamal: No No No No! I thought we were friends; real friends wouldn’t be doing this it’s either me or drugs! Choose one.
Mark and Jose: Bye it was good knowing you, this stuff is good for you.
Staying above the influence is a hard thing to do for some people these days. Some middle school and high school students chose to go on the wrong paths which messes them up for a really long time, or maybe even for life. They smoke things such as marijuana and sometimes sell drugs if it is possible. This needs to stop with the help of people like Ms. Berner, my principal; and even facebook pages where the message is stay above the influence.
More people need to step up and be like Jamal, basically say no to drugs. Even if you have known a friend since pre-k and they want to do drugs say no! Absolutely no one should persuade you do drugs, even if it is your own cousin, for instance Jose’s cousin. You need to say no, no matter what! Together we can keep people especially kids above the influence.
Every week day in the morning when I go to school I walk to the train station about four blocks away from my house. Almost every morning when I go into the train station I see a lady. She is homeless and has a mental problem sometimes she is begging for money or just talking to herself. I find this to be unfair because since she is homeless she obviously doesn’t have a job or a home; there isn’t even a homeless shelter nearby for her. Also in the streets of New York City there is a lot of crime and wrong doing especially at night. She can get hurt or be persuaded into doing wrong things, this needs to change, not only for her but for a lot of other people.
A possible solution could be to call a local organization that helps homeless people or people with disabilities. This would work because it would get her off the street and some were safe. This would be hard to do because my family and I really don’t know of any place that will do that. Also it could be hard to get someone with mental issues off the street. The streets are what she calls home and no matter what you never want to leave home. Either way this needs to be fixed for all or most homeless New Yorkers.
